Every Kid should get to go to Summer Camp -

Let's make that happen!

Do you love working with children and young adults? Do you love the high energy and excitement of summer camp? Do you encourage others and go the extra mile to make someone’s day special? We are looking for dedicated, caring, fun-loving people who will help make our summer medical camps a safe and magical experience for campers with serious and chronic illnesses and disabilities. At Zajac Ranch, we turn the impossible into possible!

The Mission

Zajac Ranch’s mission as a non-profit registered charity is to develop and operate an accessible, innovative, and inclusive facility for children and young adults with medical conditions, who otherwise would not have the opportunity to attend camp. Our volunteers are an integral part of our team and contribute significantly creating a fun camp environment.

Zajac Ranch is a summer camp nestled in the mountains on the beautiful Stave Lake, just an hour outside of Vancouver. Moreover, Zajac Ranch offers subsidies to all campers. Zajac Ranch offers camps to a wide range of campers with serious and chronic illnesses and disabilities, from cerebral palsy to ASD and many campers have multiple diagnoses.

This volunteering program is open in the summer from June 15th – September 4th.

The 2-week role training begins in June.

Available positions:

Below are our two sections of roles: Camp Counselors (Rangers) and Medical Volunteers.

All positions are residential (Mon-Fri) and you will have the weekends off. On-site staff housing includes semi-private rooms shared with other staff members.

CAMP COUNSELORS

Volunteer camp counselors will assist staff and be assigned to group of campers each week. Additionally, we maintain a staff-to-camper ratio of 1:3, ensuring close supervision for each camper. As a volunteer, you will have similar responsibilities to summer staff, with the exception of personal care duties. Before the beginning of camp, you will receive training, and throughout your stay at Zajac Ranch, you will receive ongoing support.

Daily tasks include:
Making sure that campers wake up in time and support campers getting ready for their activities
Assisting the activity leaders with their group (high ropes, low ropes, archery, canoeing, kayaking, arts & crafts, drama, swimming, camp games, campfires and talent shows!)
Eat meals & support campers eating meals
Getting them ready for bed
General clean-up
Behavior management, support & supervision
Assisting and facilitating camp events (e.g. evening programs, campfires, theme days…)

MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS

At Zajac Ranch, we cater to over 80 different diagnoses. Our 24-hour medical center, the OK Corral, provides care for every camper. The center is staffed by Registered Nurses, Doctors & other medical professionals, who donate their time, campers can receive medical care while experiencing the joys of summer camp.

The Nursing Director coordinates the medical volunteers and goes over every case with them.

Typical tasks include:
Volunteers provide medications and support routine medical needs and first aid.
Assisting children who may not be feeling well or who experience seizures and/or other conditions on a regular basis.

“The camp experience was one of the highlights of my nursing career. Many adolescents have never met a peer with the same condition. They feel ‘different’ and isolated at a time in their life when ‘fitting in’ is so important. At camp, these kids met others facing some of the same challenges that they do. They blossomed and the benefits of the experience lasted long after camp was done. The friendships forged at weekend camps carried over for the rest of the year.”
